Dayton has a thriving and eclectic coffee scene, with a diverse range of independent roasters doing incredible things with beans from all over the world. Here you can learn more about their roasting tendencies, famous roasts, and where to find ’em.
Pettibone Coffee

FAMOUS ROAST: Varies constantly by season/harvest
You know you’re in for a good roast when the bag of coffee is just black with simple type lettering! Pettibone let their renowned coffees speak for themselves, and have a constantly changing lineup based on the flavors of the seasonal harvests where they source their beans from.
I love the square layout of their coffee bar in their main coffee shop, it really seems like a cool communal gathering place.
Their meticulous detail to roasting consistently great beans has earned them a large following and presence in the Dayton coffee scene. The name “Pettibone” comes from a lake in that state up north… and you have to have great coffee in Ohio to name your company after that!
Namesake

FAMOUS FOR: Award-winning coffee, eco-friendly packaging
Voted in the top 10 of national coffee subscription services, Namesake prioritizes “intentional” coffee and their small-batch roasts are best enjoyed slowly and, well, intentionally!
They select coffees from a range of unique origins, such as their Tanzania Peaberry blend, from smallhold farmers across Tanzania’s southern highlands. Importantly, all their coffee packaging is 100% compostable, showing they’re not only intentional about coffee, but the environment too!

Wood Burl
If there’s such a thing as a coffee wizard, the roaster behind Wood Burl would certainly be in the running! The aesthetic of Wood Burl is heavy metal, Nordic vibes and you can bet their beans pack a similar punch. They were actually founded by the team from local favorite Press Coffee Bar.
The Julian Calderon, from Huila Colombia, was released as their 10-year anniversary special roast in 2024, but they’re often experimenting with different roast profiles such as AA Kenyan coffee and others. Definitely one of the more striking bags of coffee you’ll find!
Boston Stoker

FAMOUS ROASTS: Hacienda La Minita, Original Grogg
The name comes from their original founding as a pipe and tobacco shop in Englewood, Ohio way back in 1973. Wanting to branch out, Boston Stoker began roasting their own coffee ten years later, and the brand has bloomed like a good pourover into one of the prominent names in Ohio coffee roasting since.
The ‘Grogg’ is their most famous roast that’s been with the company since they first started roasting beans. An interesting addition to the flavor profile is Scotch whiskey, adding a richness with the caramel and toasted nuts to create a great “all-rounder.”
Their espresso roast is another well loved coffee, and for something more refined check out their Hacienda La Minita, a Costa Rican single origin that comes direct trade from Bill in La Minita farm, one of Costa Rica’s most respected coffee estates.
Poppets Coffee

FAMOUS ROAST: Hawaiian Kona
Their Hawaiian Kona roast took a gold medal in the “espresso” category of the Golden Bean awards. They constantly have a good seasonal rotation of flavors though, such as their fall lineup which consists of a traditional pumpkin spice roast and an interesting bourbon pecan.
Their distinct branding (afraid I don’t know how to describe it other than patchwork toys drinking coffee!?) is also renowned and actually won a coffee design award, which we love.
Twisted River

FAMOUS FOR: Single origins, seasonal blends
Twisted River has a wide range of single origins, from Kenyan AB to Colombian Excelso from the highlands of the Andes (2200m above sea level!)
You can find Twisted River being served at the “Ground Control” self-serve coffee kiosk at Dayton’s own National Air Force Museum, which was a cool recent addition for them in 2026. They roast slowly and meaningfully with care.
Reza’s
FAMOUS FOR: Family-owned Dayton roasting staple
Reza’s have been roasting coffee in Dayton for decades. Though there isn’t much information about their famous roasts online, you can stop in to their Beaver Creek location to sample their freshly roasted beans yourself!
